Label 5 Classic Black is a 40% ABV blended Scotch whisky offered by the French La Martiniquaise group under its Label 5 brand, made from a blend of malt and grain whiskies. It is a blend for everyday drinking, particularly well known in France.
According to the producer, the blend is made from selected malt and grain whiskies, matured in bourbon casks in Scottish warehouses for more than three years. La Martiniquaise also owns Glen Moray distillery in Speyside. Classic Black won gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2013.
It has a deep amber colour with golden reflections. On the nose, delicate fruit notes are joined by freshly baked shortbread. On the palate, fruit and vanilla come first, followed by a light peaty sensation. The finish is long and soft, leaving a faint woody note. The producer sums up the profile as caramel, nuts, spice, soft fruitiness and fine peat notes.
It can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or as a long drink with mixers such as soda and cola. Its balanced character offers a comfortable pairing with barbecued food, a nut platter and everyday meals such as pizza.
