Kamiki Sakura Wood is a 48% ABV blended malt whisky from the Kamiki brand in Japan's Nara region. The blend of Japanese and world malt whiskies matures in oak, then in Japanese cedar, and finally in sakura (cherry wood) casks.
The brand presents Sakura Wood as the first whisky finished in both Japanese cedar and sakura wood casks: the whisky rests first in oak, then in Yoshino Sugi cedar casks, and finally in sakura casks. In Japan, the cherry tree's brief but intense blossoming symbolises transience and beauty; this release brings out notes of sandalwood, cinnamon, sweet blossom and cherry.
The nose shows ripe banana, candied chestnut, cinnamon and a light pine note, followed by a warm, forest-like woodiness. The palate offers woodiness, sandalwood and soft spice, with sweet cherries balancing salty notes. The finish is floral and spring-fresh, closing with cedar spice.
It can be enjoyed neat or with a few drops of water, ideally in a tulip-shaped glass to let its floral notes open up. Its cherry and spice notes pair well with fruit desserts, sushi and mature cheeses.
