Kamiki Intense Wood is a 48% ABV blended malt whisky from the Kamiki brand in Japan's Nara region. The blend brings together Japanese malt whiskies with malt whiskies selected from around the world, and rests longer in Japanese cedar (Yoshino Sugi) casks than the standard Kamiki.
What does the cedar cask add?
After maturing its blend in oak, Kamiki rests it a second time in casks made of Yoshino Sugi, a Japanese cedar; the brand presents this as the first whisky finished in Japanese cedar casks. Used for centuries in temple construction, this wood gives the whisky aromas of sandalwood and resinous timber. In the Intense Wood release, this resting period is extended to bring out a more pronounced woody character; it is aimed at those seeking a more intense flavour.
What does Kamiki Intense Wood taste like?
The nose shows freshly cut wood, dried tea leaves and earthy mushroom notes. The palate offers toasted tobacco, sweet cinnamon, tea and brown bread, with cedar in the background. The finish is spicy, closing with toasted honey and grain notes.
How should it be served, and what food does it pair with?
As it is bottled at 48% ABV, it can be opened up with a few drops of water or a single ice cube after tasting it neat. Its woody, spicy character pairs well with barbecue and grilled red meats and mature cheeses.
