Ganohora White Wine

Ganohora White Wine is a Thracian white wine from the Ganohora range of Melen Şarapçılık, produced in Hoşköy in the Şarköy district of Tekirdağ. The range's name comes from Ganohora, the historic name of the region at the foot of Mount Ganos, once known for its monasteries and the vineyards surrounding them.

Who is Melen?

Melen is one of Turkey's oldest boutique wine producers. The family's wine journey began in the early 1920s with grandfather Ahmet Çetintaş; in the 1950s, his son Hüseyin Çetintaş took over production, and third-generation Cem Çetintaş moved into bottling and launched the Melen brand. The winery operates from its historic building on the Hoşköy coast. The producer grows local varieties alongside international white grapes such as Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc in vineyards on the windy slopes of Mount Ganos running down to the Sea of Marmara; the grapes are hand-picked in the early morning from September through mid-October.

The history of Ganos wine

The region's wine tradition stretches back to antiquity. Ganos wine, stored in amphorae made in workshops at Hoşköy, was carried across a wide geography in the Byzantine and Ottoman periods; traces of this trade can be seen in Ganos amphorae found in the excavations at Gaziköy and among the shipwrecks at Yenikapı, Istanbul.
