Ardbeg Corryvreckan is a no-age-statement, heavily peated single malt Scotch whisky from the Ardbeg Distillery on Islay, bottled at 57.1% ABV. It takes its name from the famous Corryvreckan whirlpool between Islay and Jura.
How is it made?
The whisky is a combination of batches matured in American oak ex-bourbon casks and new French oak casks. The French oak adds a spicy, dark depth to Ardbeg's sharp peat smoke. Bottled at high strength, it delivers a powerful, intense drinking experience. It was named the World's Best Single Malt Whisky at the 2010 World Whisky Awards.
What does Ardbeg Corryvreckan taste like?
The nose shows dark chocolate, blackcurrant, brown sugar and pine needle, with seaweed and smoked meat smoke beneath. The palate is peppery, intense and chewy: dark coffee, black fruits, bitter almond and star anise notes combine with peat smoke. The finish is long and powerful; coffee, chocolate-covered cherry and pepper linger for a long time.
How should it be served?
As it is bottled at high strength, it is best tasted neat first, then opened up with a few drops of water; water brings out its salty, sea-fresh side.
What food does it pair with?
Its dark, smoky character strikes a good balance with grilled red meat, mature hard cheeses and dark chocolate desserts.
