Tamnavulin Sherry Cask is a 40% ABV single malt Scotch whisky from Speyside, produced at the Tamnavulin Distillery, owned by Whyte & Mackay. The producer presents this bottling as the richer member of the range, with hints of sweet orange, soft spice and sticky toffee pudding.
Like all the distillery's bottlings, the whisky first matures in American ex-bourbon casks. It then finishes in sherry-seasoned casks chosen from long-established cask workshops in southern Spain. This second stage adds layers of dried fruit, orange and warm spice to the whisky; the colour and body deepen accordingly.
The nose combines vanilla, caramel and banana with the sweetness of milk chocolate and the light sharpness of fresh ginger. The palate shows layers of maple syrup, raisin and orange; hints of apricot and melon add a fruity freshness.
It is recommended neat or with a few drops of water; its sweet character also suits after-dinner drinking. Its dried-fruit, chocolatey notes pair well with chocolate and fruit desserts, while its warm spice suits mature cheeses.
