Sierra Antiguo Añejo is an añejo tequila at 40% ABV made from 100% Weber blue agave and aged in oak casks, produced by the family company Destilerías Sierra Unidas (NOM 1451) in Guadalajara. The name 'Antiguo' (old, traditional) points to the brand's 100% agave range that follows traditional methods. Añejo tequilas are legally required to be aged for at least a year in oak casks not exceeding 600 litres.
It has a deep golden colour with amber glints. On the nose, caramelised agave, vanilla and light wood combine with a fine sweetness. On the palate it's full and rounded; caramel, vanilla, dried fruit and a touch of spice are detectable. The finish is long, smooth and lightly woody; agave's natural sweetness is balanced by cask notes.
It's recommended neat or over ice to let its complex aromas open up. It also shows its depth in spirit-forward cocktails such as a tequila Old Fashioned or Tequila Sour.
Grilled meats, characterful mature cheeses and dark chocolate are matches that suit this añejo's caramel and woody notes. It can also be served alongside chocolate desserts after a meal.
