Rodnik's Absinth Black is a black-coloured, 70% ABV absinthe produced by Beveland Distillers in Spain. Distilled from various Mediterranean herbs, primarily wormwood (Artemisia absinthium), this dark-coloured version of the Rodnik's range presents the classic absinthe character with deeper, more intense herbal tones. It is traditionally drunk diluted with water and sugar.
What does Rodnik's Absinth Black taste like?
On the nose, intense wormwood and anise stand out, accompanied by the sweetness of liquorice root and herbal, spiced tones. On the palate, aromatic wormwood, bittersweet root spices, star anise and liquorice root are pronounced; the structure is full and intense. The finish is long, warming and aromatic; the trace of anise and wormwood lingers along with a light sweetness.
How is it served?
In the traditional method, 3 to 5 measures of ice-cold water are added, filtered through a sugar cube on an absinthe spoon, over one measure of absinthe. As water is added the drink turns cloudy (louche) and the herbal aromas open up. As a simpler option, it can also be drunk with ice and a slice of lemon, or lengthened with tonic. Given its 70% alcohol content, drinking it neat is not recommended, and it should be consumed in moderation.
What food does it pair with?
Diluted with water, absinthe can be served as an aperitif alongside a mezze platter, as with other anise-based drinks. Its anise- and herb-led character also pairs well with light dishes of grilled fish and seafood.
