Hennessy XO

Hennessy X.O is a 40% ABV XO Cognac created by Maurice Hennessy in 1870 for those close to him, considered one of the earliest examples of the "extra old" category. Hennessy describes it as the house's icon, the "original X.O". The powerful eaux-de-vie in the blend are matured for a long time in young barrels, gradually developing a round structure. The bottle's familiar grape-cluster shape was first designed by Gérald de Geoffre in 1947. Hennessy belongs to Moët Hennessy, the wine and spirits division of the LVMH group.

What does Hennessy X.O taste like?

Hennessy describes X.O as a seven-stage tasting journey. The palate is first met by candied fruits, followed by rising warmth and a pronounced spice reminiscent of black pepper. This is followed by the round taste of bitter chocolate, with oak and vanilla notes appearing in waves. The finish is long and lingering, carrying an echo of all the preceding flavours. The body is full and powerful.

How is it served?

It can be drunk neat at room temperature in a tulip-shaped glass. Hennessy also specifically recommends trying X.O with ice: the cold opens the aromas step by step, revealing its different layers.

What food does it pair with?

Because of its bitter chocolate and spice notes it pairs well with rich chocolate desserts and mature hard cheeses. Toasted walnuts and hazelnuts also make a fitting accompaniment.
