Glenfiddich Grand Cru 23 Year Old is a single malt Scotch whisky from the Glenfiddich Distillery in Speyside, matured for 23 years and then given a final maturation in French sparkling wine (cuvée) casks. The bottle sold in Europe is 43% ABV and belongs to the brand's Grand Series collection.
How is it made?
The whisky matures for 23 years in American oak and old sherry casks. It then rests for around four months in French oak cuvée casks from France's region famous for sparkling wine. This final stage adds elegant notes such as brioche, lemon and honeysuckle to Glenfiddich's white-fruit character.
What does Glenfiddich Grand Cru 23 Year Old taste like?
The nose shows soft lemon and apple with a creamy texture, marzipan and honeyed brioche; grape, flower honey and light red fruit emerge over time. The palate is full and oily; vanilla, brioche, sandalwood, pear and grape combine with honeyed fruit and apple tart. The finish is long and sweet, leaving traces of nut and brioche.
How should it be served?
It is recommended neat or with a few drops of water, in a tulip-shaped tasting glass; it is a whisky often chosen for celebratory moments.
What food does it pair with?
Its elegant, fruity character pairs well with fish and seafood, mature cheeses and fruit desserts.
