Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin

Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin is a 43% ABV Irish gin made at The Shed Distillery, founded by PJ Rigney, in the town of Drumshanbo, County Leitrim, Ireland. It takes its name from the Chinese gunpowder green tea that signs its recipe; its blue bottle is the brand's most recognised signature.

How is it made?

The gin is distilled slowly by hand in medieval-style copper pot stills. Eight botanicals are distilled in the pot while four are added by vapour infusion. The recipe includes juniper, angelica root, orris root, caraway, coriander, meadowsweet, cardamom and star anise, alongside Chinese lemon, grapefruit, kaffir lime and gunpowder tea; Oriental botanicals meet plants native to Ireland.

What does it taste like?

Its nose is light and citrus-forward: fresh lemon peel, a herbal juniper reminiscent of sage, and green tea and meadowsweet in the background. On the palate, grapefruit appears first, followed by juniper and green tea; anise and cardamom add a sweet-spiced touch, while meadowsweet lends a honey- and vanilla-like delicacy. The finish carries a light warmth.

How should it be served?

The producer recommends a gin and tonic made with a generous slice of red grapefruit and a good-quality tonic; it also gives good results in refreshing cocktails.

Which dishes does it pair with?

Citrus and tea notes suit sushi, seafood and lightly spiced Asian dishes.
