Disaronno Originale

Disaronno Originale is a 28% ABV amaretto liqueur produced by Illva Saronno in the town of Saronno, in Italy's Lombardy region. Despite its characteristic almond-like taste, it contains no almond; according to the producer, it is obtained by infusing apricot kernel oil with pure alcohol, burnt sugar and the essence of 17 selected herbs and fruits.

How did Disaronno come about?

The liqueur was sold as Amaretto di Saronno until 2001, when it was renamed Disaronno Originale for marketing reasons. It carries the name of Saronno, considered the birthplace of the amaretto style. Its square-capped bottle, designed by a Murano craftsman, is the brand's emblem; the producer today offers a refreshed, more contemporary version of this bottle.

What does Disaronno taste like?

The amber-coloured liqueur has an intense, lingering nose. On the palate, a sweet, intense taste reminiscent of marzipan and almond-paste cake stands out; the caramel-like depth of the burnt sugar supports this sweetness.

How is it served?

It can be drunk neat with ice or in cocktails such as the Disaronno Sour and Disaronno Spritz. It can be lengthened with cola, ginger ale or fruit juice; it is also added to hot chocolate and coffee.

What food does it pair with?

Amaretto, used in some recipes for the Italian dessert tiramisu, makes a natural match with chocolate desserts and almond biscuits. Toasted almonds and hazelnuts are also a good accompaniment.
