Molinari Sambuca Extra is a 40% ABV Italian sambuca liqueur based on star anise, produced in the town of Civitavecchia, Italy. The recipe was developed in 1945 by Angelo Molinari, an expert in perfumery and blending, and remains a family recipe kept secret to this day. The producer states that the "Extra" name is a classification documenting the product's superior quality.
How is it made?
Sambuca Molinari's distinctive aroma comes from essential oils obtained from star anise. This aroma is combined with wheat alcohol, sugar and a secret blend of fine herbs and spices. A second facility opened in Colfelice in 1974 to meet growing demand in Italy and abroad.
What does Molinari Sambuca taste like?
On the nose, intense anise and floral notes stand out. On the palate, a sweet anise taste reminiscent of liquorice root is felt; the finish is soft and lingering.
How is it served?
The best-known way to drink it in Italy is "con la mosca": served in a glass with a coffee bean dropped in. It can be added to coffee or served in a small glass after coffee. The producer also states it can be drunk neat or with ice.
What food does it pair with?
The producer particularly recommends sambuca at the end of a meal, as a liqueur that closes the table. Alongside coffee it pairs well with dry pastries and biscuits, fruit desserts, or toasted nuts.
