Frangelico is a 20% ABV hazelnut and herbal liqueur made in Canale, in Italy's Piedmont region. Created in 1978, the brand has belonged to Campari Group since 2010. According to the producer's account, it takes its name from Fra Angelico, a monk said to have lived in Piedmont and developed distinctive liqueur recipes; the bottle's shape, resembling a Franciscan monk's habit, is a nod to this story.
How is Frangelico made?
The foundation of the liqueur is a hazelnut distillate, enriched with cocoa, vanilla and other natural aromas, then blended with sugar, alcohol and water. The producer states that the Italian hazelnuts it uses are large, plump, evenly sized and free of bitterness, making them especially suited to roasting.
What does Frangelico taste like?
The golden-toasted liqueur has a nose dominated by roasted hazelnut, with notes of grated chocolate and vanilla pod felt beneath. On the palate it offers a sweet, soft, hazelnut-forward structure.
How is it served?
The producer recommends Frangelico over ice, with ice and a squeeze of fresh lime, lengthened with soda, or as a chilled shot. It can be added to coffee and used in hazelnut cocktails.
What food does it pair with?
The hazelnut and cocoa notes make a natural match with chocolate desserts, tiramisu and praline cakes. Toasted hazelnuts and almonds are also a good after-dinner accompaniment.

- Keep wine bottles on their side and spirits upright.
- Serve white/rosé and sparkling wine at 6–12°C, and reds at 16–18°C.
- Keep opened bottles closed; drink wine within a few days of opening.
