Russian Standard Original is a 40% ABV premium Russian wheat vodka produced in St Petersburg. The brand was founded in 1998 by Rustam Tariko and is now part of the Roust group; the producer markets it as the world's most popular premium Russian vodka. The vodka is made with winter wheat grown on the Russian steppes and the soft, glacial water of Lake Ladoga. The brand emphasises that its recipe stays true to the vodka principles set out by Dmitri Mendeleev in 1894.
What does Russian Standard Original taste like?
According to Falstaff's notes, the nose is fine, with a light salty-savoury character and a touch of vanilla. The palate is creamy and smooth, accompanied by delicate spice; the finish is long, closing with a gradually emerging sweetness. Liquor.com's review also highlights a light sweetness from the wheat, a surprisingly pronounced sense of pepper, and an almost oily texture.
How is it served?
It can be drunk neat, from the freezer or well chilled, in small glasses. Its creamy, peppery structure stays pronounced in cocktails where vodka is the focus, such as the Vodka Martini, and in tonic- or soda-based long drinks.
What food does it pair with?
As in Russian dining tradition, it pairs well with caviar, smoked salmon, herring and pickles. Its creamy texture rounds out cold meze platters and seafood in a balanced way.
