Ouzo 12 is a traditional 38% ABV Greek ouzo produced at the Kaloyiannis-Koutsikos distillery in Volos, Greece. The brand's roots trace back to the Kaloyiannis distillery founded in Istanbul in 1880; production moved to Thessaloniki in 1925. The "12" in its name comes from cask number 12, where the most prized ouzo was kept.
A blend built mainly around aniseed and aromatic spices is distilled twice. According to recipe information shared by retailers, spices such as fennel, cardamom, cinnamon and nutmeg are used alongside aniseed, giving it an aniseed character with a light sweetness and spice.
It is colourless and clear. The nose shows herbs, spices and fine citrus traces alongside aniseed. The palate shows pronounced aniseed, a sweetish, herbal structure and a light spice.
Traditionally it is drunk with water or ice; it turns milky white the moment either is added. It is served chilled as an aperitif. At 38% ABV, it is lower in alcohol than most rakis.
It is a staple of the Greek meze table: olives, cheese, grilled sardines and tzatziki are its best-known companions. It also pairs well with squid, octopus and other seafood.
