Malibu Original

Malibu Original is a 21% ABV liqueur made by adding coconut aroma to a white rum base. The brand, owned by Pernod Ricard, began its story in 1978 as Coco Rico; it launched under the name Malibu in 1980. The producer specifically stresses that Malibu is not a coconut rum, but a white-rum-based drink flavoured with coconut.

How is it made?

The white rum used in Malibu was for many years produced in Barbados, at a distillery by the coast. According to the producer, Malibu is today mostly blended and bottled in Canada, with a portion made in the US and Spain. The rum is distilled from a sweet syrup obtained from sugar cane refining. The producer states the drink contains no coconut milk, coconut cream or dairy product.

What does Malibu Original taste like?

On the nose, a lightly toasted, full, round coconut aroma stands out. On the palate, the creamy coconut taste is joined by notes reminiscent of vanilla custard. Its body is delicate; a light warmth from the rum is completed by a silky, lingering finish.

How is it served?

Malibu is one of the well-known ingredients of the Piña Colada. The easiest serve is mixing it with pineapple juice over plenty of ice; it can also be made into a long drink with cola or fruit juices.

What food does it pair with?

Its tropical coconut aroma makes a natural match with pineapple- and mango-based fruit desserts. Coconut cakes and ice cream are also good companions; it can also be chosen alongside sweet-and-sour, lightly spiced Asian and Caribbean dishes.
