Highland Park 18 Year Old Viking Pride is a 43% ABV, 18-year-old single malt Scotch whisky produced by the Highland Park Distillery on the Orkney Islands. A multi-award-winning malt, it received new packaging under the name "Viking Pride" in 2017.
What makes Highland Park 18 different?
The whisky matures for at least 18 years in first-fill and sherry-seasoned European and American oak casks, then is blended and bottled at 43% ABV. Its long maturation balances the dried-fruit and spice character of sherry casks with the distillery's lightly peated malt. Described by F. Paul Pacult of Spirit Journal as "the world's best spirit", this whisky stands out for its consistent quality over the years.
What does Highland Park 18 Year Old taste like?
The nose opens with dark chocolate, golden syrup and treacle-like molasses; juicy raisin, papaya, and red fruits such as strawberry and raspberry appear, along with cinnamon and clove. The palate is sweet, fruity and buttery: honey, chocolate, raisin and cherry; then coffee bean, clove, ginger and nutmeg. On the finish, woody spice strengthens; sweetness, light smoke and wood stay together for a long time.
How should it be served, and what does it pair with?
It is recommended neat or with a drop or two of water, at room temperature. It pairs well with red meat dishes such as lamb, mature hard cheeses and dark chocolate.
