Highland Park 15 Year Old Viking Heart is a 44% ABV, 15-year-old single malt Scotch whisky produced by the Highland Park Distillery on the Orkney Islands. It is the "Viking Heart" release of the brand's 15-year-old malt, returning after a long absence.
What makes Viking Heart different?
The whisky matures in a combination of sherry-seasoned European oak, American oak casks and a small proportion of refill casks. It is bottled with no added colouring and without chill filtration. Its most striking feature is its packaging: the bottle is a ceramic decanter embossed with the brand's lion-and-serpent motif. With this choice, the distillery references the periods when whisky was historically stored in earthenware vessels.
What does Highland Park 15 Year Old taste like?
The nose shows sweet notes reminiscent of crème brûlée, buttery caramel and caramelised apple standing out; toasted honeycomb, milk chocolate, heather honey and a light peat accompany them. The palate has an apple-pie feel where almond, apple and cinnamon come together. The finish leaves blackberry, blackcurrant and cinnamon after a light black-pepper warmth.
How should it be served, and what does it pair with?
It is recommended neat or with a few drops of water. Apple and cinnamon fruit desserts, mature cheeses and roasted nuts make it a fitting after-dinner choice.
