Cloudy Bay Chardonnay is a white wine produced by Cloudy Bay winery, founded in 1985 in New Zealand's Marlborough region. The grapes come from vineyards in the stony-soiled Wairau Valley and the heavier clay of the Southern Valleys; the combination of two different soils brings together ripe fruit and citrus elegance.
Hand-harvested bunches are whole-bunch pressed. The must is fermented with wild yeasts in French oak casks, and the wine is blended after maturing for roughly 11 months across cask and large oak vats. Its alcohol content in recent vintages is 13.5%.
On the nose, white nectarine, pear and citrus combine with an elegant, delicate oak touch. On the palate, vibrant citrus, ripe apricot and greengage stand out; a mineral acidity gives the wine energy. On the finish, nutty and lightly toasted notes can be detected.
It's recommended served at 10-12°C. It pairs well with seafood, creamy pasta dishes, soft cow's milk cheeses, caprese salad and grilled or smoked dishes. It can be drunk right away, or it can develop further over a few years when stored well.
