Beylerbeyi Margaz is a 45% ABV limited-production raki made by triple-distilling the local white Margaz grape grown around Kaş, Antalya. It is the third release in Sarper Damıtımcılık's single-varietal "Rezerv" series; the 2023 edition came to market as a selection of around 40,000 litres. It is made from grape suma with no added sugar.
With a long history in the region, Margaz is a thick-skinned, sugar-rich grape grown at an altitude of 800–1,000 metres. Its whitish berries turn pink as they ripen. In 2020, a geographical indication study for the grape was launched in cooperation with local chambers and the Tekirdağ Viticulture Research Institute.
According to tasting notes, the nose shows an intense fresh-grape aroma, joined by hints of hazelnut, almond and ripe pear. The fruitiness is also pronounced on the palate, with grape coming before aniseed. When water is added, herbal notes like tarragon and fennel, along with spiced tones, become more pronounced, while the drink stays round.
It is diluted with cold water and drunk with ice. Its lively, Mediterranean character suits herb- and yoghurt-based mezes, seafood and white-fleshed fish.
