Yeni Rakı is a Turkish raki first launched in 1937 by Tekel, and today produced by Mey Diageo, Diageo's company in Turkey. The producer describes it as the most widely produced raki brand in the world. Its alcohol strength is 45%.
The raki's base is suma, the grape distillate obtained from fresh and dried grapes. In Yeni Rakı, at least 65% of the alcohol comes from suma; the remainder is alcohol derived from sugar-beet molasses. The suma is redistilled together with aniseed selected from Anatolia. Production takes place at the Manisa-Alaşehir and Nevşehir facilities.
A pronounced, clean aniseed leads on the nose. On the palate, the sweetish, lightly spiced character of the aniseed combines with the roundness of the grape distillate; when water is added, the raki takes on its typical milky-white colour and the aroma feels softer. The aniseed taste lingers long on the finish.
Traditionally it is drunk mixed with cold water in a tall, narrow raki glass; ice is added after the water. Keeping a glass of plain water alongside is also customary. It pairs with cold mezes such as white cheese, melon, haydari and aubergine salad, grilled fish, and the main courses of Turkish cuisine.
