Skinos Mastiha

Skinos Mastiha is a 30% ABV mastic liqueur made from a distillate of resin from the mastic trees grown on the Greek island of Chios. The brand describes itself as a drink carrying the spirit of Greek writing, and is known for its distinctive white glass bottle with white stripes and round windows.

How is it made?

According to the producer, the mastic-bearing trees grow only on the island of Chios; the harvest takes place once a year, in June and July. Resin oozing from incisions cut into the tree trunk hardens over 10 to 20 days and is then collected; village women then hand-sort and clean the finest grains. The resin is mixed with quality alcohol and heated over fire in bronze cauldrons called stills to produce an aromatic essence. Sugar, alcohol and spring water are added to this essence to create a balanced, clear drink.

What does Skinos Mastiha taste like?

It is crystal clear and full-bodied. Its lightly sweet character is led by fresh mastic aroma, joined by touches of mint and pine. The producer also notes earthy and leafy notes, light sweetness and a smooth alcohol impression.

How is it served and what does it pair with?

It can be drunk ice-cold, neat or with plenty of ice; lengthened with tonic, it makes a refreshing long drink. Fitting for a Mediterranean table, this liqueur pairs well with olive-oil mezes, fresh salads, grilled fish and seafood.
