Kleos Mastiha Premium

Kleos Mastiha Spirit is a 30% ABV Greek mastiha liqueur made with mastiha resin unique to the Greek island of Chios. The brand was founded in 2017 by Effie Panagopoulos, who is noted as the first Greek woman to found a spirits brand. Its name comes from kleos, a word appearing in Homer's Iliad meaning "immortal glory".

What is mastiha, and how is Kleos made?

Mastiha is the resin of the mastic tree (Skinos), which grows only in 24 villages in the south of Chios, and it carries a protected designation of origin in the European Union. According to the producer, Kleos is double-distilled in small copper stills over a neutral grain alcohol base; both raw mastiha resin and mastiha essential oil are used. The brand positions the liqueur as lower in sugar than comparable products.

What does Kleos taste like?

On the nose, a floral bouquet and eucalyptus aroma stand out. On the palate, notes of cucumber, mint and sweet tea are felt; the overall impression is a pronounced freshness.

How is it served?

The producer recommends drinking the liqueur neat with ice and a slice of lemon. Thanks to its low sugar content, it is also used as a base in spritz and low-alcohol cocktails; it can be mixed one to one with many drinks.

What food does it pair with?

Mastiha's resinous, cooling character makes a natural match with Mediterranean mezze. A chilled glass pairs well alongside olive-oil mezze, white cheese and light seafood such as grilled fish.
