Rossbacher

Rossbacher is a 32% ABV herbal liqueur (Kräuterlikör), one of Austria's classic herbal spirits. Its recipe was created in 1897 by Adolf Wunderlich, who at just 19 founded a liqueur distillery in Vienna, and the producer states the recipe has remained unchanged ever since. It is known as a typical example of the semi-bitter (Halbbitter) style in Austria.

How is it made?

Rossbacher is prepared from selected herbs, roots and fruits without artificial additives. All three production methods — maceration, percolation and distillation — are used; which herb is processed by which method is set out in the carefully guarded original recipe. The full recipe itself remains a secret.

What does Rossbacher taste like?

The nose is herbal and spicy, with a hint of lemon in the background. The palate brings a soft body with a very measured sweetness and a balanced herbal bitterness. The finish is clean and tidy. The combination of pronounced herbal aroma and restrained sugar sets it apart from sweeter liqueurs.

How is it served and what does it pair with?

The producer recommends Rossbacher neat, on ice, or with a slice of lemon, tonic or soda. Because of its herbal bitterness, it can be served in a small glass after hearty dishes such as grilled red meat or barbecue; it also goes well with roasted nuts.
