Kulüp Rakı is a 50% ABV traditional Turkish raki produced by Mey|Diageo in Alaşehir, Manisa. First produced in 1930, the brand predates Yeni Rakı by seven years and, according to Wikipedia, is today the oldest continuously produced raki brand. While most rakis on the market are 45%, Kulüp stands out with its 50% strength.
How is Kulüp Rakı made?
Kulüp is made entirely from grape-derived suma and aniseed seed; no agricultural ethyl alcohol from sugar-beet molasses is used. The producer states the formula has been unchanged since 1930. The figure of two gentlemen in tuxedos on the label bears the signature of graphic artist İhap Hulusi Görey.
What does Kulüp Rakı taste like?
The slightly higher proportion of aniseed that accompanies its high alcohol strength gives it a distinctive, characterful taste.
How is it served?
It can be drunk at 8–10 °C, with water or ice, or neat. Because of its 50% strength, the water ratio can be adjusted to personal taste; raki is added first, then cold water, and ice last.
What food does it pair with?
Recommended companions are cheeses, melon and cold mezes. White cheese, mature kashar, olive-oil dishes and seafood complete the classic raki table.
