Jägermeister is a herbal liqueur produced by Mast-Jägermeister in the town of Wolfenbüttel, in Germany's Lower Saxony state. Its recipe was developed by Curt Mast in 1934 and is still made in the same town today. Its alcohol content is 35%.
How is Jägermeister made?
The liqueur is made with 56 different components drawn from herbs, roots, fruit and spices. These components are steeped in a mixture of water and alcohol to produce macerations, which are then matured in oak barrels for up to a year. In the final stage, sugar, caramel and alcohol are added to balance the taste and alcohol content. The full details of the recipe are kept secret by the producer.
What does Jägermeister taste like?
According to the producer's own account, its taste rests on a balance of herbs, spices and citrus notes. Orange peel's tart freshness combines with aromatic spices such as ginger, star anise and clove, with a light liquorice root felt behind them. The overall profile is sweet yet lightly bitter, warm and spiced.
How is it served?
The producer recommends serving Jägermeister as a shot, chilled to around -18 °C in the freezer. It can also be made into a long drink with tonic, ginger ale or cold cola. With its intense herbal character, it is also chosen as an after-dinner liqueur.
What food does Jägermeister pair with?
Drunk as an after-dinner liqueur, it forms a fitting match with bitter chocolate desserts; its anise and spice notes complement the chocolate's intensity. Toasted nuts are also a simple, common accompaniment alongside a chilled glass.
