Efe Rakı Göbek is a 45% ABV Turkish raki produced by Efe Alkollü İçecekler at its distillery in Menderes, İzmir. It takes its name from "göbek" (heart), the term given to the middle portion of raki that flows during distillation. The Efe brand, founded after the state monopoly ended in 2002, is known as the first private-sector raki, launched first in Germany and then in Turkey in 2004.

How is Efe Göbek made?

In production, suma obtained from grapes is distilled together with aniseed in copper stills. For Efe Göbek, the third section — what the producer calls "the heart of the heart" — is separated out from five distinct distillation batches. The resulting raki is bottled after resting for around four months.

What does Efe Göbek taste like?

It turns distinctly white when water is added. Aniseed dominates the nose; on the palate, aniseed and rested alcohol are well fused together. It offers a clean, easy-drinking raki profile in the classic style.

How is it served?

Following tradition, it is diluted with cold water in a tall, narrow raki glass; those who wish can add ice afterwards. It is common practice to keep a separate glass of cold water alongside for those who prefer to drink it neat.

What food does it pair with?

Because of its classic profile, it pairs well with Mediterranean and Aegean mezes: white cheese, melon, olive-oil herbs and charred vegetables are safe choices. Grilled or steamed fish and seafood are also indispensable companions at the raki table.
