Czar's Original Currant is a 38% ABV blackcurrant-flavoured vodka made by the Ladoga Group in St Petersburg, Russia. Production uses blackcurrants gathered from Russia's north-western Republic of Karelia and quickly frozen fresh. Its name on the Russian label is Царская Оригинальная Смородина.
Ladoga's flavoured products in the Czar's Original (Russian: Царская Оригинальная) range use Lux-grade grain alcohol; the aromatic alcohol is obtained by distilling fresh fruit, berries and spices in copper stills. The range was developed as the flavoured arm of Ladoga's Czar's Original vodka, launched in 2003 to mark St Petersburg's 300th anniversary.
What does Czar's Original Currant taste like?
The producer describes this vodka's aroma as a forest scent recalling a basket full of fresh blackcurrants, felt the moment the bottle is opened. The aroma is fruit-forward and is presented together with the vodka's clean body. According to Ladoga, its flavoured Czar's vodkas are designed to be enjoyed both neat and in cocktails.
How should it be served?
In keeping with Russian tradition, it can be drunk neat, well chilled, in small glasses. In long drinks made with ice, soda or tonic, the fruit aroma stays distinct; the blackcurrant character also stands out in simple mixes with red-fruit juice.
What does Czar's Original Currant pair well with?
The producer recommends this vodka with bitter chocolate and mint truffles. Its fruit aroma forms a natural match with bitter-chocolate desserts and blackcurrant cakes.
