Southern Comfort

Southern Comfort is a 35% ABV American liqueur created in 1874 in New Orleans by M.W. Heron, made by adding fruit and spice to a whiskey base. Heron's aim was to create a smooth, easy-drinking whiskey taste without harshness; the recipe accordingly combines stone fruits and spices with whiskey. The brand now belongs to Sazerac, and the producer states that in 2017 the recipe returned to its whiskey roots.

What does Southern Comfort taste like?

The amber-coloured liqueur's nose shows juicy orange, honey and light herbal notes. The palate reveals vanilla, caramelised fruit, ripe peach, orange and cinnamon, joined by a light lemon touch and a smooth whiskey base. An independent review also noted vibrant spices reminiscent of star anise, nutmeg and black pepper alongside vanilla pod on the palate. The finish is long, led by vanilla and honey, leaving a pleasant spiced impression.

How is it served?

The producer describes Southern Comfort as an easy-going drink that can be enjoyed in any style. It can be drunk neat over ice, or lengthened with cola for the classic Comfort & Cola. It is also widely used in cocktails such as whiskey sour, Alabama Slammer and Hurricane, the drink synonymous with New Orleans.

What food does it pair with?

Its fruity, spiced character strikes a good balance with barbecue and grilled flavours. The brand's own suggestions include a glass alongside pizza. Thanks to its peach and vanilla notes, it also pairs with fruity desserts, especially peach tart or pie.
