Kahlúa

Kahlúa is a 16% ABV coffee liqueur made with 100% Arabica coffee beans grown in Mexico's Veracruz region, along with rum and sugar. Produced in Veracruz since 1936, the brand has belonged to Pernod Ricard since 2005 and is considered one of the best-known coffee liqueurs in the world. Once sold at 20% ABV, the liqueur has been offered at 16% since 2021 in markets such as the UK.

What does Kahlúa taste like?

The dark brown liqueur has a nose with pronounced roasted Arabica coffee, bitter chocolate, vanilla and caramel. On the palate, a sweet coffee taste is felt alongside a soft sweetness from the rum, along with caramel notes reminiscent of cocoa butter and confectionery. Coffee and vanilla linger for a while on the finish. Because it is made from real coffee, it contains a small amount of caffeine.

How is it served?

Kahlúa is the core ingredient of classic cocktails such as the Espresso Martini, Black Russian and White Russian. It can also be drunk neat over ice or mixed with milk or cream.

What desserts does Kahlúa pair with?

Its coffee and cocoa notes make a natural match with chocolate desserts; a small glass goes well alongside tiramisu, brownies or chocolate mousse. It can also be used in dessert recipes and on ice cream. Toasted hazelnuts and almonds are also a simple accompaniment.
