Chambord

Chambord is a 16.5% ABV fruit liqueur made in France's Loire Valley, based on raspberry and blackberry. Developed in 1982, the brand is inspired by raspberry liqueurs made in the Loire region in the late 17th century, said to have been presented to Louis XIV during his visits to the Château de Chambord. The brand has belonged to Brown-Forman since 2006.

How is Chambord made?

Whole raspberries and blackberries are steeped in French spirit for several weeks to obtain a fruit infusion. Once the infusion is drawn off, a second measure of alcohol is added over the fruit, after which the remaining fruit is pressed to extract its natural sugar and water. In the final stage, this mixture is blended with Cognac, Madagascan vanilla, Moroccan citrus peel, honey and various herbs and spices.

What does Chambord taste like?

On the palate, dark red fruits such as blackberry and fresh redcurrant stand out, accompanied by a rich vanilla. The Cognac base adds a round, warm depth to the fruit's sweetness. The liqueur is also known for its gold-detailed, globe-shaped bottle.

How is it served?

It is a classic ingredient of Kir Royale-style drinks made by adding a few drops to sparkling wine or champagne, and of cocktails such as the French Martini. It can also be drunk neat with ice.

What desserts does it pair with?

Its red fruit aroma pairs very well with chocolate desserts, fruit tarts and cheesecake; drizzling it over desserts is also a common use.
